Katy ISD Closure Information

-last updated March 23, 2020

We understand that this has been a challenging time for our school community as many balance career, family and childcare.  As you know, the information regarding the prevention and spread of COVID-19 has been evolving daily, while reported cases in the Greater Houston area have gradually increased.  The CDC has already recommended social distancing protocols, and is now asking the public to comply with directives to limit gatherings to ten people or less and implement multi-week school closures for a minimum of four weeks to mitigate the spread of the virus.  With these priorities in mind, Katy ISD will be postponing the opening of its schools until at least Monday, April 13.

This measure will provide the District and health officials time to evaluate the extent of COVID-19 in our community.  Data collected over the next several weeks will also allow us to make an informed decision to resume in-person instruction or extend the closure.

Katy ISD supports our parents' decisions regarding their child's well-being and attendance at school. Absences that occurred prior to spring break and were related to COVID-19 concerns and students' attendance at school are coded as excused.

ACT/SAT Saturday Testing

March testing dates are cancelled until further notice.   More information about the SATs can be found on the College Board website.

Community Education and Harris County Department of Education (HCDE) Courses

All evening courses held for both Katy ISD Community Education and HCDE are cancelled through May 2020 or until further notice.

Campus requests for student documents (VOE, birth certificate, custody paperwork) should be directed to 281-396-2150.

Emergency Text Notifications from Katy ISD

The District utilizes emergency text notifications as an additional layer of messaging to Katy ISD’s already existing platforms — email, website, social and news media. Emergency text notifications are only used by the District central office for emergency and related information (i.e. school closings, weather conditions, etc.). Parents/guardians who wish to receive emergency text notifications from the District should make certain that their mobile phone number is registered in the Home Access Center (HAC) contact form — specifically within the “Automated Contact Text” field. Please note that it takes at least 24 hours for the system to update and recognize new entries. Detailed instructions on how to register your mobile number.   Once you have opted-in, emergency text notifications will arrive from a Katy ISD assigned number such as “606-80.”  However, this origin number may differ for each mobile user, depending on the service provider.  Because of this, Katy ISD identifies each District text with this opening, “Katy ISD notification:”

Katy ISD Staff: If you are a District employee, please follow the employee instructions for registering a mobile phone number.

The attendance requirement for spring 2020 high school final exam exemptions has been waived.  The semester grade average and discipline exemption requirements remain intact.

Facilities Rentals

All facilities are closed to outside rentals through Sunday, April 12 or until further notice.  This includes rentals pertaining to after school programs, athletic rentals, churches, fine art rentals and all others.

The secondary 5th six weeks progress report grading period and submission of grades is on hold.  At this time the submission of grades is pending.

The District has been working to develop plans for online education to provide continuity in our students’ learning during the closure. Online teaching and learning will be comprised of teaching strategies supported by technology tools and resources.  The planned resources and tools that will be available through the District’s online environment will be an extension of the same online learning that has been utilized by our students, staff and parents since the beginning of this school year.  We will be providing additional information on Katy ISD’s online learning rollout by March 23.
