EMAIL FROM KATY ISD ON 5/3/20
May 3, 2020
Dear Katy ISD Parents/Guardians and Staff,
This month marks the remainder of the last few weeks of the spring semester. Below are end of the year procedures and grading information, as well as summer school, Class of 2020, and Athletics updates, to better assist parents and staff in navigating the close of the 2019-20 school year.
End of the Year Student Check-in/Pick-up Process
This coming week, students’ campuses will begin communicating end of the year directions on how and when families may check-in and pick-up district and personal items from schools. This includes items left on campuses prior to the schools closure (i.e. athletic equipment, books, etc), as well as caps and gowns and yearbooks for graduations. Check-in and pick-up processes will look very similar to Katy ISD’s “Grab and Go” curbside meals and technology distribution model. Safety will be our number one priority during these processes.
Elementary End of the Year Grading Guidelines
As a reminder, teachers will not be recording letter or numerical grades for assignments during the 4th nine weeks. On a weekly basis, teachers have been providing students and parents informal feedback through various platforms such as Seesaw, Canvas, email, or phone calls, based on the student’s progress in online learning assignments. All students’ final report cards will show “Exempt (EX)” for grades in all content areas including art, music and PE for the fourth nine-weeks grading period. Students’ cumulative average will be based on the average for the first three nine weeks grading periods (i.e. GP1 + GP2 + GP3/3). All Katy ISD students will receive a mailed end of the year cumulative report card.
Secondary End of the Year Grading Guidelines
Katy ISD made some modifications to the sixth six weeks grading guidelines that included reducing the number of grades required per marking period. Secondary students are completing assignments in each grading category (Major, Minor, Other) in order to continue to provide students an opportunity to earn a numerical grade that fairly represents their mastery of course content. Additionally, students have been able to use the reteach/retest procedure for all Major grades. Final exams will not be administered this spring. Semester averages will be calculated by taking the average of the 4th, 5th, and 6th week grading periods. All Katy ISD students will receive a mailed end of the year cumulative report card.
Updated GPAs and Class Ranks
The Class of 2020 updated GPA and Class Rank will be released via the Home Access Center (HAC) on Monday, May 4 in preparation for graduation ceremonies. All high school students will receive updated GPA, Class Rank (top ten percent only) and quartile rank on Thursday, June 11 when student transcripts are finalized following the close of the spring 2020 semester.
Transcripts for Graduating Seniors
The District is currently accepting transcript requests for all high school seniors. Official transcripts are being printed, sealed and mailed every Tuesday, now through August. Please contact your campus registrar if you have questions regarding your campus’ procedure for requesting an official transcript.
Grade Report Information
Parents of secondary students may view their child’s most recent progress report grade in the Home Access Center (HAC). Instructions regarding how to access your child’s report card in the HAC can be accessed here for English and here for Spanish. Elementary students’ 4th nine week progress report feedback was emailed by your child’s teacher(s) on Friday, April 27, 2020. If you have any questions regarding your student’s progress report, please contact your child’s campus.
Class of 2020 Information
High school campuses anticipate having all senior graduation items ready to distribute by Monday, May 11, and no later than Friday, May 22. Campuses will notify parent once the “Grab and Go” dates and times are confirmed for graduating seniors. The District will also release the confirmed dates via the weekly Wednesday Class of 2020 Update email. If you have any questions concerning your graduating senior, or in regard to your Balfour or Herff Jones graduation order, please email Classof2020@KatyISD.org.
The June backup dates that had been established in the event that social gatherings continue to be restricted by the state are now in effect and replace the original May 2020 senior graduation dates. July backup dates have also been secured should there be a need to reschedule the June dates. The revised graduation dates are below.
The Class of 2020 proms that are rescheduled at the Leonard Merrell Center (LMC) in June 2020 remain on schedule as of now. There is no dance ticket charge for seniors and their guests. Specific information regarding proms will be provided by students’ campuses. Please keep in mind that our ability to facilitate proms will ultimately be determined by any future state or local orders concerning social distancing and large gatherings.
Should you have any general questions regarding the Class of 2020, please email Classof2020@katyisd.org.
Online Summer School
Elementary, Junior High and High School Summer School will be held online this year. Katy Virtual School (KVS) will be offering high school original credit courses as planned. In the past, we have offered the flexibility of in-person or online instruction for original credit. Due to social distancing guidelines and our efforts to minimize unnecessary health and safety risks, all original credit courses will be moved to online instruction through KVS. Students who previously applied to take original credit in KSAT were sent an email on Monday, April 27 regarding the change to online instruction through KVS. A list of core subject and AP/Pre-AP courses can be found in the green “Registration” icon by clicking this link.
Similar to how we are addressing original credit during social distancing, credit recovery will be taught online through Katy Online Learning Academy (KOLA). This program offers credit recovery on the campuses during the school year and summer. More about KOLA can be found here.
